Karim Benzema could be the answer up front for Arsenal

The smiles looked a bit sheepish, the trophy hoist half-heartedly as the ticker tape cascaded after Arsenal captured the Barclays Asia Trophy with a 3-1 win over Everton on Saturday. And rightly so. Despite the best intentions of the Premier League and the tournament's hosts, this is not a prestigious award. Not a lot can be gleaned from winning it.
Everton provided good Premier League opposition -- Gerard Deulofeu's pace intermittently terrified the defence, while Ross Barkely's scorching drive beat the otherwise impressive Petr Cech on his debut -- but a scan of Arsenal's muted celebrations told you everything you needed to know about the magnitude of the occasion.
Theo Walcott was still right to enjoy his well-taken goal, consolidating after his opening effort in the FA Cup final and showing an intent to pick up where he left off. However, when the season starts for real, it is not difficult to imagine that the sluggish Seamus Coleman will be rather more attuned to the threat of the players around him.
The point is that a nice finish in a stylish win in an ultimately meaningless game should not be allowed to obscure deeper truths, one of which being the fact that Arsenal still need to sign a top-level striker if they harbour real aspirations of doing something in the Premier League this season. They may well get their hands on one, but it could require some patience.
Theo Walcott helped spark Arsenal's victory against Everton.
Just as Arsenal's game in Singapore was starting, two teams were packing their bags 3,760 miles away in Melbourne. Real Madrid had played their first game under Rafa Benitez and the result was an uninspiring -- and possibly even ominous -- 0-0 draw after 90 minutes against Roma. But of more interest than the final score was the way Benitez laid his team out.
Last season's established front three was dispensed with, as Jese played up front, supported by a trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Martin Odegaard in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Clearly the Conservative government in Britain is not alone in agitating to rethink the BBC.
With Isco and James Rodriguez said to be likely starters under Benitez, it has been rumoured that Ronaldo will continue his natural evolution and become a pure penalty-box predator as a centre-forward at the apex of Benitez's favoured formation. If that scenario were to be played out, a certain Karim Benzema might just become expendable.
The Frenchman has been a key player in the Madrid XI for some years now, but as the sales of Xabi Alonso, Angel Di Maria, Mesut Ozil and, stretching even further back, Claude Makelele have shown, that does not preclude president Florentino Perez from suddenly deeming that a player's services are no longer required. The ruthless pursuit of improvement, so often flawed in its execution, has had many undeserving casualties.
The rumours have generated momentum, and seeing Benzema's name splashed over the back pages in conjunction with Arsenal's, as it was this week, is enough to get any supporter a little excited. That is the lure of the transfer window and why it has become an industry unto itself, selling hopes and dreams to millions every day. But if Arsenal do sign Benzema, it won't, to borrow the tabloid vernacular, be the result of a big "swoop," a bold £40 million bid out of nowhere with Arsene Wenger hounding Perez and bombarding him with phone calls. Certain conditions will have to be met first for it to be even remotely viable.
Before Benzema would consider a move to Arsenal, you suspect Real Madrid would have to first decide that they no longer want him, either due to tactical considerations or, in the case of the purchases of Ozil from Madrid and Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona, if the European superpower need to raise money and free up space in the squad to facilitate another superstar arrival. For Arsenal, it's all about waiting for the opportunity to present itself, if it ever does.
That's surely why Wenger hasn't rushed to do his business despite leaving a good portion of fans restless, wondering why he didn't work harder to sign a player like Jackson Martinez, who last week completed his move to Atletico Madrid. In the summer transfer market, it is sometimes the case that good things come to those who wait. It might look foolish if the opportunity never arrives, but there is an inherent risk in rushing in, too.
It is why Wenger spoke in such generalities when invited to discuss the possible purchase of Benzema earlier this week: "If I find an exceptional player to strengthen, I will do it. It depends what's on the market. It's not easy, there are a lot of teams out there in Europe competing for the same player. We don't rule it out and we don't guarantee we will sign."
The reason for his reticence is clear. The past two summers have taught Wenger that if you wait for the cards to fall in the high-stakes European transfer game, you might just pick up an ace. And Real Madrid haven't played their hand yet.

Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Karim Benzema and Harry Kane Rumours

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is Manchester United's key attacking target this summer, but if the club cannot lure him from Spain, they could opt to sign Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane.
That's according to Guardian writer Jamie Jackson, who spoke to talkSPORT (h/t Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News): "United's number one target is Benzema, but if they come to the end of the window and United are still struggling to get a top striker, you might see them trying to push the Kane deal through."
Jackson's assertions come after Sky Sports journalist James Cooperwas told "Kane was not on United's radar last month but the Red Devils have now revised their stance on the Spurs forward." The Englishman enjoyed a stunning debut Premier League campaign, netting 21 goals, but it's extremely risky to snap a youngster up after one season of success.

United legend Andy Cole believes Benzema's arrival would "definitely work," but that Kane is too inexperienced to make the step toward Old Trafford, reported by Mike Keegan of the MailOnline:
He's had a brilliant first season. But then can he come to Man United, and if it is true for £40m, and bring to Man United what Man United need?
[...] I think the kid is talented. We have to be honest. He's had half a season where everything went for him. Penalties at the keeper and rebounds are coming straight to his feet.
He's scored some goals but to take that leap—because your second season in the Premier League is always tough—to leave Tottenham and come to Man United and for Man United to pin all their hopes on him, for the money and if it did happen, that's a hell of a lot of pressure.
Cole certainly has some prominent points, but Kane's positive style of play and energetic nature continually put him in the position to receive strokes of luck.

He is a constant threat inside the box and works hard to burst forward when operating from a deeper position. Kane's potential can be measured by the range of goals he scores; long-rangers, tap-ins, headers, composed finishes from inside the box and penalties.
That said, Benzema is a proven entity at the highest level, someone whose quality is easily overlooked at the Bernabeu. The Telegraph (h/t Marc Williams of the Daily Star) suggests the striker could be included in a swap deal involving goalkeeper David De Gea, who appears destined to join Los Blancos.
However, the Daily Mail's Ian Ladyman believes Madrid will open the bidding on De Gea at just £13 million due to his contract expiring next year. Benzema is unlikely to be included if Madrid are looking to low-ball the Red Devils, especially as Transfermarkt.co.uk marks his worth in the region of £44 million.
Williams notes Arsenal and Liverpool are also interested in Benzema. B/R UK's Jonathan Johnson recently discussed whether the Gunners or United are more likely to sign him:
Ben McAleer of WhoScored.com recently provided a statistical look at Benzema, Kane and United's other potential options, tweeted via Football365:
Benzema's future remains uncertain now Rafa Benitez is in charge of Madrid, a man who may make Cristiano Ronaldo his central striker, according to AS (h/t Adam Shergold of the MailOnline).
The Premier League could be a profitable stomping ground for Benzema, who is built to dominate against the most physical of centre-backs. United fans may imagine his hold-up play feeding Memphis Depay and former team-mate Angel Di Maria, an interesting attacking trio before you even consider Wayne Rooney's role.
Boss Louis van Gaal has to get his next striker signing correct after the loan capture of Radamel Falcao produced just four goals during 2014-15. Benzema and Kane are exciting options, although the element of risk involved in the latter would see the pressure ramped up for both Van Gaal and the player himself

Real Madrid Transfer News: Latest Karim Benzema and Isco Rumours

Real Madrid Transfer News: Latest Karim Benzema and Isco Rumours
Paul White/Associated Press
Real Madrid are preparing themselves for bids for two of their steadiest performers—with rumours Karim Benzema and Iscoare attracting interest from across Europe.
Matt Barlow of the Mail Online says Arsenal could move for Frenchman Benzema after Arsene Wenger admitted he is still looking at top-class options to improve his squad.
When asked directly about his interest in the attacker, the Gunners boss said, per Barlow:
I don't know where this comes from but it's not happening [a move for Benzema] at the moment, no. If I find an exceptional player to strengthen, I will do it. It depends what's on the market. It's not easy, there are a lot of teams out there in Europe competing for the same player. We don't rule it out and we don't guarantee we will sign.
Manu Fernandez/Associated Press
Benzema has just completed his sixth season at the Bernabeu, and with changes happening under new boss Rafa Benitez, no player's place in the squad is guaranteed. Wenger has recently spoken about the "cohesion" of his unit, per Barlow, and Benzema would certainly add potency to Arsenal's striking options.
Despite the rumours, Benzema has been in fine fettle in a Madrid shirt in recent times, scoring 21 goals in La Liga and the Champions League in 2014-15, per WhoScored.com, and providing 11 assists.
Francois Mori/Associated Press
It is unlikely Benitez will want to sacrifice a player with such a statistical return, but if Cristiano Ronaldo ends up as the new manager's striker, Benzema might be surplus to requirements.
Benzema's international team-mate, Olivier Giroud, further fanned the flames of speculation when asked if his team were moving for the Madrid star, choosing to sidestep the question, per football writer Samuel Jay C:

Juventus Want Isco

With the future of Arturo Vidal in doubt at Italian champions Juventus, the Old Lady is rumoured to be eyeing up a move for midfielder Isco.
La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t TalkSport) say Juve are favourites to grab the 23-year-old, beating ChelseaManchester City and Arsenal to his signature.
Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri is a known admirer of the player and recently name-dropped him in an interview with La Repubblica (h/t Tom Conn of Inside Spanish Football).
"I’d like to have a playmaker that never gets bored. A wild card within a balanced game," he said. "Selfishness and narcissism, in moderation, isn’t detrimental to the health of the team. I like Real Madrid’s Isco and Brazil’s Oscar."
Daniel Ochoa de Olza/Associated Press
The Spain international featured prominently for Carlo Ancelotti last term, appearing in 45 games in La Liga and the Champions League, providing nine assists for his team, per WhoScored.
Both Benzema and Isco would be losses for Benitez as he looks to turn around the fortunes of the Spanish giants. Both players give Madrid strong tactical variations, and Benitez will not want to see an exodus shortly after his arrival.
But with the unrivalled riches on offer in the EPL and the rise of Juve in European football once again, there is no guarantee either player will stay with Los Blancos with other challenges on offer.

London calling: Could Benzema move to the Emirates?
Here are all the latest Gunners stories from today's Daily Mirror...

Cech mate

Laurent Koscielny has claimed Arsenal's back four will be “more serene” thanks to the arrival of Petr Cech from Chelsea.
The French defender will start in front of Cech for the first time in Singapore on Saturday when the former Stamford Bridge keeper makes his debut against Everton in the Final of the Barclays Asia Trophy.
And Koscielny can already tell it's going to be a profitable partnership as he taps into Cech's experience.
“Petr has played 11 years in England, and made more than 300 appearances in the Premier League, and has won a lot of trophies.
“He is professional, you felt that in his first training session. He talks a lot, and his position that's very important. He will do well with us and when you have a good keeper like this behind you, you are more serene.”

Bellerin extends Gunners stay

GettyHector Bellerin
Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin has signed a new long-term deal at the Emirates, the club have confirmed.
The Spaniard played in 20 of the Gunners' 38 Premier League appearances last term, and has committed his future to the north London outfit.
He made one appearance in his debut 2013-14 season having joined for Barcelona, in the League Cup, before heading to Watford for an eight-game loan spell.
An injury to Mathieu Debuchy last season gave him his chance at right-back, and he impressed with his performances, scoring twice in 28 games in all competitions.
The pacy defender recently insisted he would not 'do a Fabregas' and head back to Barcelona.

Baggies eye Gnabry

GettySerge Gnabry takes on Niall Keown
West Brom boss Tony Pulis is hoping to snap up Arsenal prospect Serge Gnabry on a season-long loan.
Germany under-21 winger Gnabry will be farmed out to give him Premier League experience to help his Arsenal career.
Pulis has been trying to sign QPR winger Matty Phillips but the club is in the middle of a potential takeover and they have yet to come up with the £8m fee.
Gnabry made his Arsenal debut in a League Cup tie in September 2012 before something of a breakthrough season in 2013/14.
However, last term was severely hampered by a serious knee injury as he failed to make a single appearance for Arsene Wenger's men.
Wenger refuses to rule out Benzema move
Karim Benzema misses from close range
Arsene Wenger has left the door open for a move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, according to the Sun.
He said: “Benzema is not one that is happening at the moment but if I can find an exceptional player to strengthen the squad I will do it.
“We don’t rule out another signing and we don’t guarantee that we will buy.
“I am happy with the squad we have but it depends what is in the market."

Gourcuff interest

Yoann Gourcuff
Arsenal are also weighing up a move for out-of-contract midfielder Yoann Gourcuff.
The former Lyon man is a free agent and, according to talkSPORT, is attracting interest from Liverpool and Arsenal.
Manchester City could also be tempted to take a chance of the playmaker, following his release by Lyon.
Gourcuff has 31 caps for France and will be looking for one last big move before entering his 30s.

Karim Benzema or Alexandre Lacazette Better for Arsenal?

The transfer rumors surrounding Arsenal’s striker pursuits have been widdled down to two names, both unsurprisingly French: Alexandre Lacazette and Karim Benzema. The similarities between the two nearly end at their nationality, however.
That right there qualifies you for a fee in the 25-35 million pound range. According to Lyon’s manager, he is not worried about Lacazette leaving, but he indicated that should someone offer 35-40 million,he would ” have to wave him off and wish him luck.”Alexandre Lacazette is new to the show. He scored a respectable 18 goals in the 2013/14 season, but that kind of return is not worth what he is going for nowadays. What he is going for nowadays is because he led all of Ligue 1 in goals last season, scoring 31 goals in all competitions.
Lacazette has proven to be a bit hesitant about his future, as he wants to step his game up to the next level. However, one good year, while impressive, does not always grab the attention of Arsene Wenger. That being said, Lacazette is only 24 years of age and could be a class striker at Arsenal for years to come.
And then there is Karim Benzema. Benzema is one of the most respected strikers in the world of football and he does so on a team that has Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and all the latest stars. yet Karim Benzema has been there his entire life and if it were up to him, he would remain there.
However, with new manager Rafa Benitez supposedly moving Ronaldo into the No. 9 role, Benzema may have to seek employment elsewhere.
Whereas Lacazette lacks experience and a golden track record, Benzema is the exact opposite. He has scored 120 goals in 251 career appearances. At 27 years of age, he still has time to remain at the peak of his game.
Benzema’s price is right up there with Lacazette. In fact, it is reported that Arsenal have made a 40 million pound bid for him.
In terms of style of play, both Lacazette and Benzema bring a style that Arsenal do not necessarily have at the striker position. Lacazette has great pace and dribbling ability. He maintains control of the ball well and as far as strikers go, he is an excellent passer.
Benzema has some of the same traits, with the added benefit that he holds up play, just like Giroud. That style of play has been the go-to at Arsenal since Giroud’s arrival and continuing with it could easily lead to much more success.
Now, let’s use Squawka‘s comparison matrix to put them side by side and see who would be best, based on their performances last year (stats are per 90 minutes played).
 ALEXANDRE LACAZETTEKARIM BENZEMA

CHANCES CREATED1.711.73
KEY PASSES1.521.33
GOALS SCORED.85.59
SHOT ACCURACY67%53%
AERIAL DUELS WON %32%49%
As you can see, the two put up similar numbers in a lot of categories but there is one area in particular that leads me to believe that Karim Benzema is a better overall fit at Arsenal than Alexandre Lacazette.
Benzema is a team-playing striker whereas Alexandre Lacazette is a striker more geared towards a team that goes to their striker for everything. Benzema delivers more assists and more chances although it is not by a landslide. I cannot help but think of everything that Karim Benzema would bring to Arsenal. The system is already geared towards his type of play. He would partner perfectly with Olivier Giroud.
Do not get me wrong, Lacazette would be fantastic too, but if the two really are going for just about the same price, might as well get the one that is a better fit. Lacazette may be younger but Arsenal have plenty of young striker talent. They need someone geared towards immediate success. If they can upgrade in the goal when it is not entirely necessary, then upgrading at striker and securing both ends of the pitch has to have at least crossed their minds.
Suggesting that Arsenal should nab Karim Benzema when they have already grabbed Petr Cech feels like borderline heresy, but the talk is hanging around, so there has to be some credence to it all.
