Phil Ball: Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema remind that football is a human business

In his weekly look back at the latest round of La Liga fixtures, Spanish football writer Phil Ball shares his thoughts on Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as Valencia and Sevilla's victories.
Apart from Neymar’s rather wonderful goal against Villarreal, it’s been an interesting week largely from the human-relations point of view of football.  The beautiful game is a business, and as such it responds to business principles, in theory anyway.  The basic idea is that if you want your multi-million pound corporation to function as efficiently as possible (and thus make ever more lovely money) you have to keep an eye on the emotional well-being of your employees, whether they’re Cristiano Ronaldo or some anonymous chap playing in the Second Division ‘B’ in Spain.  It’s not just a matter of keeping them fit, restricting their intake of chips, and giving them an occasional massage.  We know this now. It’s about helping them to develop and then function as human beings, in a high-pressure and slightly weird sort of world.   The trouble is, there is no easy manual to give out (and anyway, lots of footballers only read the PlayStation version), and most professional footballers succeed in the game precisely because they decided, at some point in their youth, to give up the education thing.  It makes this business-principle notion a tricky one to apply to football – a world unto itself.
Take the most obvious problem to have come out of the week’s events. Karim Benzema is in potentially big trouble, allegedly involved in the blackmail case surrounding his French colleague Mathieu Valbuena.  If found guilty, Benzema could face up to five years in the slammer, which would certainly put paid to his career (he’s 27) and considerably damage the corporate interests of his employers, Real Madrid.  Perhaps that’s why Cristiano wants out (more of that later). This is one of Benzema’s best seasons so far. When Benzema plays, Madrid have scored 2.6 goals this season per game, but when he’s absent, it drops to 1.6.  In the 8 games he’s figured in this season, Madrid have scored 21 times.  It’s not an insignificant statistic.  Without him (6 games) they’ve scored only 10.  Benzema, once dubbed the ‘hunting cat’ by José Mourinho (Mou meant that Benzema was a kitten, as opposed to an aggressive salivating dog), has also proved his worth to Ronaldo.  The Portuguese forward has scored 13 this season whilst accompanied by Benzema in his 8 matches, and only three goals in the 6 matches in which the French forward has been absent.  With or without you, indeed.

When Benzema plays, Madrid have scored 2.6 goals this season per game, but when he’s absent, it drops to 1.6

Talking of Ronaldo, about whom, there is now a new docu-film entitled ‘Me, me, me!’ (imaginatively sub-titled ‘Ronaldo’), in which great man does himself something of a disservice by giving the distinct impression that he finally believes in all the hype.  I’ve always reckoned Ronaldo was quite an interesting and ok guy – but it seems that his ego’s finally caught up with him, and that he’s now in the process of eating himself.  The problem is, and here we come back to the idea of a business, is that others have to share office space with Ronaldo, day in day out.  So all this ‘I am the greatest’ stuff must begin to grate, even for those colleagues who appreciate the amount of goals he scores. Ronaldo has what is known as a ‘strong personality’. There’s one in every team, and the others never challenge him. They learn that it just isn’t worth it, because he’ll sulk for days, or not pass the ball to them.  And so the guy with the ‘caracter’, as they say in Spanish, never gets to learn, never gets to develop (as a person), because he thinks that everyone agrees with him.  And then they start to act in a way that suggests they think they are untouchable, within the business enterprise.   Ronaldo’s whispering into Laurent Blanc’s ear after the game against PSG in midweek has caused a thousand speculations to be launched.  Apparently he told Blanc (presumably in English – their lingua franca) that he loved the way PSG played and that ‘I’d like to work with you’.  The truth is that he actually said ‘I like that tie that you’re wearing. Where did you buy it?’
Ronaldo will be sulking now for the next two weeks of course, because he failed to score in the Sanchez Pizjuan and his team went down 3-2 to Sevilla, a team that have disappointed so far this season but who will usually give you a torrid time when you visit them – especially if you’re Real Madrid. Sergio Ramos opened the scoring with a fantastic ‘Chilena’ (bicycle kick) but injured himself in the process, on his old stomping ground.  Sevilla came back, as you always felt they might, and even Fernando Llorente scored – the winner actually.  They eventually  outplayed Madrid – the former leader’s first defeat, and both Yevhen Konoplyanka and Grzergorz Krychowiak took over the game.  The conclusion that one can draw from all this is that Sevilla might be improving, but their team is basically a phonetic nightmare for all foreign commentators.
Madrid, now three points behind Barcelona, have thus two weeks to prepare for the ‘clásico’, although seven of their players will be either involved in international  friendlies or playing in South America’s preliminaries for the 2018 World Cup.  Sevilla have done them no psychological favours, and their second was scored by Ever Banega, a player who, to continue this week’s theme, came out this week in defence of Unai Emery ( the manager who signed him), by saying that he was the best, that he worked incredibly hard, and that the players were all behind him.  The last part is unlikely, since Emery is like Marmite – you love him or you hate him – but it was an interesting contrast to other similar cases this week.
Ever Banega (C) celebrates a goal with Grzegorz Krychowiak.

Maybe it’s something about November, but the week has been all about player-manager casualties. If you want to read the best book about what footballers really think about their coaches, then read Eamon Dunphy’s ‘Only a Game?’, still the best book written about football and a much better insider view than ‘The Secret Footballer’, precisely because it is not ‘secret’.  Dunphy tells it as it is, without fear of either reprimand or lawsuit.  It would neatly frame the Valencia situation this week, in which under-fire manager Nuno Espirito Santo once again dropped star signing Alvaro Negredo from the squad for the visit to in-form Celta.  Nuno probably had little to do with the original loan signing of Negredo, but that cannot explain his recent treatment of him.  However, managers and players are not obliged to get on, and something has obviously happened there that threatens Nuno’s authority. Nuno doesn’t appear to be a difficult man on the surface, and is suffering the usual slings and arrows that any Valencia manager has to dodge, but the amazing 5-1 win at Celta would rather seem to endorse his position, certainly on Negredo.  Anyway, his name means ‘Nuno Holy Spirit’, so he must be pretty useful. Valencia now lie seventh, which is hardly tragic, but their fans are habitually impossible to please.  Celta meanwhile, must lick their wounds and try to find the defensive stability which would enable them to be serious challengers for a top-four spot, which was more or less the conclusion of this column last week.
Down at Granada, manager Jose Ramón Sandoval dropped star man Isaac Success for reasons unknown, but it was obviously some breach of discipline or the fact that his surname’s gone to his head. Granada lost to Rayo Vallecano and remain next to bottom of the league.  And although it seemed to be happening as I was writing this piece on Sunday night, Real Sociedad’s coach David Moyes appeared to have been condemned by the committee meeting at the club the same afternoon, which was attended by several senior players, whose opinions on the situation were being sought after Real lost poorly, 2-0 to Las Palmas on Friday night, and Moyes flew home to England to attend his daughter’s birthday party.
Moyes has shown little emotional intelligence since his arrival a year ago, and zero intercultural awareness – a term used in sociology but a crucial consideration when a business seeks to employ people from abroad.  If Moyes has indeed gone, then it will merely be the most high-profile example of an interesting business week.

Zinedine Zidane believes Karim Benzema on Valbuena sex-tape case

Former France international Zinedine Zidane says he believes what Karim Benzema has told him about his involvement in the Mathieu Valbuena blackmail case.
Real Madrid striker Benzema, 27, was last week charged as part of a wider investigation into an attempt to blackmail his France teammate Valbuena, 31, over a sex tape.
As a result of the controversy, both players were left out of the France squad for this month's friendly matches against Germany and England.
Benzema, who has denied any wrongdoing, was not selected by Real Madrid for their 3-2 defeat against Sevilla at the weekend. Valbuena, though, played all 90 minutes of Lyon's 3-0 derby win over Saint-Etienne on Sunday.
Zidane, 43, is currently coaching Real Madrid's B side, Real Madrid Castilla, and he offered his support to Benzema when asked by French radio station RMC about the situation the former Lyon forward has found himself in.
"For Karim, obviously I'm very moved," Zidane said at a news conference. "I saw him -- I spoke with him. I believe in everything he tells me and nothing else.
"What we have to do, all of us, is to always be careful. That's what I said to him. That's my advice."
Investigators suspect Benzema was approached by a childhood friend to act as an intermediary between blackmailers and Valbuena.
Benzema's lawyer denied reports on Friday that the striker had confessed to telling Valbuena that he should hand over money to people attempting to blackmail him.
According to RMC, the Lyon player is set to appear before an investigating judge on either Nov. 19 or 20 in order to give his side of the story.
Speaking after Lyon's victory over Saint-Etienne, Valbuena said he was pleased to focus on football again.
"I'm happy to do my job," he told Lyon's official website. "The non-sport stuff... it happens. I'm making do with it.
"There are not many things that affect me, even if it's not always pleasant."
Meanwhile, Lyon manager Hubert Fournier said he felt he needed to start Valbuena on Sunday despite the off-field distractions.
France boss Didier Deschamps said he had decided to give Valbuena "a breather" in light of the blackmail case.
But Lyon decided to trust the former Marseille player in what was one of their biggest games of the season.
"Where Mathieu is happiest is on the pitch," Fournier told a news conference. He's already been penalised by what's happened, by his non-selection [for France].
"I didn't see myself giving him an additional punishment."

Real Madrid's Karim Benzema hails Angel di Maria

Real Madrid's French forward Karim Benzema has hailed his former team-mate Angel di Maria as a player and a person.
Los Blancos sold him to Manchester United, who shuffled him on to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
"In Real Madrid he did everything," explained Benzema to Le Parisien. "He played up front, in midfield, as well as left back."
Benzema says the ideal formation for the Rosario-born Argentine is a 4-3-3, occupying a wide slot.
"A 4-4-2 as well, doesn't change much for him, but but where he plays best is the wing," added the forward.
Benzema highlighted three qualities in Di Maria that helps him make the difference - his speed, his technique and his rhythm.
"He knows everything at the highest level," insisted the Frenchman, describing Di Maria as a "great kid" on and off the pitch.

Arsenal Transfer News: Karim Benzema Plans Emerge, Latest Rumours

Arsene Wenger is reportedly refusing to admit defeat over his failed summer pursuit of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. That's if you believe the latest reports.
Spanish website Fichajes.net (h/t Metro) stated Arsenal bossWenger is planning a new bid to try to tempt Madrid into a sale. But the same report also claims Los Blancos president Florentino Perez isn't interested in selling, and that only an "irresistible bid" would turn his head.
What qualifies as an "irresistible bid" is left unclear, although the Spanish source does claim €60 million wasn't enough to land Benzemathis summer. There's also the not-so small matter of the player himself being reluctant to swap the Spanish capital for north London.
During a recent interview with French programme TelefootBenzemadismissed the idea he was ever considering leaving Madrid to join Arsenal (h/t Telegraph Sport): "Not at all in fact. I'm not going to repeat myself every time. I'm at the best club in the world and I'm going to continue to work every year. I'm happy where I am."
Those words directly contradict many reports from the English press this summer. Back in late-August, Daily Star Sunday reporter Harry Pratt claimed Benzema was ready to become an Arsenal player.
But no deal ever took place, as Wenger remained content with his existing attackers.
The Frenchman recently publicly expressed his confidence in his current strikers. The Gunners boss believes Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott can all be prolific this season, according to Goal.com.
That belief will have been reinforced by two members of that trio,Walcott and Giroud, bagging both of Arsenal's goals in the club's 2-0Premier League win over Stoke City on Saturday.
Wenger believes in Walcott and the rest of Arsenal's current strikers.
Wenger offered his backing for Walcott, who started the match against the Potters as Arsenal's lone centre-forward. According to Max Jones of the club's official website, Wenger said: "His goal was outstanding. The quality of his movement, the quality of his control and the quality of his finish was absolutely outstanding. It’s a real striker’s goal.
But Wenger also referenced how sporadic his team has been in front of goal this season. He suggested the Gunners had created 30 shots on goal against Stoke, but noted there's a gap between chances and goals at the moment.
Walcott at least seems aware of the problem. He's called on himself and Arsenal's other strikers to take greater advantage of the many chances that come their way, per the Press Association (h/t BTSport): "We create chances so we just have to put them away."
In fairness to Walcott, his most recent goal continued a fine scoring run for the 26-year-old England international, per Squawka:
Yet despite his efforts, the Gunners have netted just five goals in as many league matches this season. Failure to score at home to both Liverpool and West Ham United cost them precious points in the title race.
Of course, the disparity between the chances Arsenal create and thoseWenger's players actually convert, is why many fans clamoured for a marquee striker to arrive during the summer window.
Former prolific Gunners frontman Thierry Henry suggested signingBenzema would win Arsenal the Premier League, during an interview on talkSport's Drivetime, alongside fellow Sky Sports pundit JamieRedknapp.
Henry believes a big-name striker would win Arsenal the league title.
Ultimately, though, the deal didn't happen. Benzema didn't want to move, and Wenger kept his money in his pocket.
His faith in his current crop of strikers is laudable, but if Walcott and Co. continue to misfire, the pressure will only increase on Wenger to find a big-name alternative. At the moment, though, that doesn't look like being Benzema.

Arsenal Transfer News: Latest on Riyad Mahrez and Karim Benzema Rumours

Arsenal Transfer News: Latest on Riyad Mahrez and Karim Benzema Rumours
Arsenal are still seeking to make more additions before the transfer window closes on Tuesday and could be pursuing Leicester City's Riyad Mahrez.According to Paul Hetherington of the Daily Star, Mahrez "is emerging as a player to join the Arsenal chief [Arsene Wenger's] long-term wish list."Per the same report, Wenger said: "I can’t predict what will happen. I am optimistic and we’re working on it. We have Danny Welbeck and Jack Wilshere out and you always want to add goalscorers to your squad."The Algerian has been in stunning form this season, scoring four times already in the Premier League and continuing his excellent end to the previous campaign, as Squawka demonstrated:
By contrast, the Gunners have scored just three times so far this term, two of them courtesy of own goals, and they could use some more firepower if they are to be competitive in the Champions League and the Premier League.
The Foxes are adamant Mahrez will not be going anywhere, though, per BBC Leicester Sport:
Indeed, for as good as Leicester's start has been, they cannot afford to lose one of their key creative talents if they are to survive again in the Premier League.
The Foxes began brightly last year and racked up some early points, including three from a memorable 5-3 victory over Manchester United, but the results dried up in the middle of the campaign, and the team required a late surgehelped in part by Mahrez's formto stay up.
Therefore, especially this late in the window, their reluctance to part with the 24-year-old is understandable.
A winger isn't what Arsenal especially need anyway. What they ideally need is a goalscorer like Karim Benzema.
The Gunners appear to have missed out on the Frenchman, but Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has admitted he would have welcomed his compatriot's arrival despite what it may have meant for his own chances to play. He told beIN Sports (Alex Harris of the Daily Star):
It is true that every year here there is speculation about a new striker signing. ... It is obvious that in a club, a team, where a lot is expected, we need several good attackers and I understand that the fans want that we spend more money. ...
The coach knows very well what he is doing, and sometimes you should not buy just to buy, and sometimes there are not players out there that you need, who are available.
Aside from that, it would have been good if Karim had signed too, eh?
ESPN FC's Miguel Delaney believes Giroud isn't quite the top-class striker Arsenal need but admitted the Gunners do have other options than Benzema.
The often-underrated 28-year-old is still a highly useful player for the Gunners and managed to score 19 goals in all competitions last season despite missing a large part of the campaign with a broken leg.
As Arsenal have shown this season, though, their strike force still isn't quite ready to fire them to the title.
With time running out in the transfer window, however, it seems unlikely they'll be able to land the kind of player they need.

Olivier Giroud: Karim Benzema signing would have been just what Arsenal needed this season

The Frenchman thinks his compatriot would have been 'good' for the Gunners, as the transfer deadline looms

Coutrymen: Giroud admits he would have liked Benzema at the Emirates
Olivier Giroud has admitted Karim Benzema is the player that Arsenal needed in this window.
The Gunners beat Newcastle 1-0 on Saturday but have now scored just three goals in their opening four Premier League games.
Despite the club’s interest in Benzema, Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez is insistent that the 27-year-old striker will not be sold in this window.
It means Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is looking elsewhere ahead of tomorrow’s deadline and 28-year-old Giroud admits another high-quality striker is needed at the club.
He said: “It is true that every year here there is speculation about a new striker signing.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain celebrates after Fabricio Coloccini scored an own goal from his deflected shot
"There were seasons when we signed [Alexis] Sanchez and [Danny] Welbeck, others when we were talking about [Luis] Suarez.
"It is obvious that in a club, a team, where a lot is expected, we need several good attackers and I understand that the fans want that we spend more money.
"It is not up to me to answer this question, the coach knows very well what he is doing, and sometimes you should not buy just to buy, and sometimes there are not players out there that you need, who are available.
"We have a very good squad, with quality, and I am sure that with this squad we can go very far.
"Aside from that, it would have been good if Karim had signed too, eh?"
Staying put: Benzema will remain in Madrid
Giroud has also admitted he deserved the nickname ‘lamppost’ after he missed a string of chances against Monaco last season as Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League.
He was criticised at the time by club legend Thierry Henry but believes he will prove yet again this season that he is worth Wenger’s faith in him.
Speaking to BeIN Sports he went on: “Maybe that nickname (lamppost) I deserved after the game against Monaco, but I didn’t play my game.
“It makes me smile more than anything else because I know when I am good or not. There you are going back several months, but I understand that you want to talk about the subject.
“It is true that Titi (Henry) said certain things in his new role as a pundit, he was quite harsh even if we can understand what he was saying.
Olivier Giroud in action with Georginio Wijnaldum
Responsibility: Arsenal are counting on Giroud to find the net
“I would have preferred that he said these things face to face, but I am not going to go back into it.
“It is finished, all of that is finished. I haven’t lost any confidence, I bounced back really well after that match.
“I think it shows that I have good mental strength, now I think that if we are going to do something great this season we will do it together.
“And I think that the boss knows that we have a very competitive team with lots of quality.”

Manchester United hijack Arsenal deal for Karim Benzema with David De Gea swap

HARRY REDKNAPP has told Manchester United to exploit Real Madrid's desire to sign David De Gea by landing Karim Benzema.

The France international has been linked with a move to the Emirates in recent weeks and is believed to be a key summer target for Arsene Wenger.
However, former Tottenham boss Redknapp thinks United can muscle in on the deal, using De Gea as leverage.
And if the striker is not up for grabs, then an arrangement could equally be done for Sergio Ramos, as according to Redknapp, Louis van Gaal 'holds all the aces'.
He told Kicca: "It looks like De Gea is definitely going. Who's going to come in? Will they try and get someone else coming the other way from Real Madrid, could it be Benzema? It will be interesting to see.
Karim Benzema

Karim Benzema has been linked with a summer move to Arsenal
"I could see a deal there for somebody, be it Benzema or Ramos? But the good thing for United is that they hold the aces.
"Van Gaal will want somebody at Real to move in the opposite direction, I'm sure. I'm sure there's a bit of poker playing at the moment."

Real Madrid Transfer News: Karim Benzema Chooses Arsenal, Paul Pogba Targeted

Real Madrid Transfer News: Karim Benzema Chooses Arsenal, Paul Pogba Targeted
Venezuelan football presenter Jeinny Lizarazo has provided updates on two key Real Madrid transfer stories, with mixed news emerging on Arsenal’s apparent pursuit of KarimBenzema and Los Blancos’ chase for Juventus sensation PaulPogba.
Here’s the update she posted:
Real have sold off important players in the previous two summers in Angel Di Maria and Mesut Ozil to fund marquee money moves for James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale, respectively, so perhaps it's plausible that a similar offset of funds may be needed to facilitate a big move in this window.
Benzema is one of Real's most important players.
Taking Benzema first, the Frenchman is a forward who knits LosBlancos’ moves together magnificently at the point of the attack, offering a wall for the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez to play off.
As we can see here courtesy of Squawka Football, although his influence is often understated, the Frenchman is consistent when it comes to chipping in with decisive contributions:
It’s what makes any sale almost unfathomable for Los Blancos. WhenBenzema hasn’t played in pre-season, Jese Rodriguez has typically occupied the role at the point of the attack and while he is a good prospect, he doesn’t possess the rounded attributes needed to lead the line for this Real Madrid team.
New Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez has already reaffirmed that he doesn’t expect the Frenchman to be going anywhere, per MikeKeegan of the Daily Mail:
In addition, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has denied on numerous occasions that there has been any contact with the player. After the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Chelsea in the Community Shield, he insisted that “nothing is happening” with the Real Madrid striker, per theofficial Arsenal website.
Letting Benzema leave would be a major faux pas from Benitez.
Nor would Madrid let anything happen, you would imagine. LosBlancos are on the cusp of such an important season in which they’ll be under massive pressure to win silverware. After failing to score in four of their pre-season games already, selling their thoroughbred No. 9 would be the worst possible preparation for 2015-16.
Drafting in Pogba may sate some supporters, though. The Juventusman is rated as one of the very best youngsters in the game and was superb for the Bianconeri as they secured a league and cup double last season.
Lizarazo claims Real will step up their efforts to sign Pogba.
But Bleacher Report’s Gianni Verschueren doesn’t think the Italian giants are in a position where they can afford to cash in on the player:
Although Juventus are a massive side in their own right, there’s a general consensus that eventually the very top teams, like Real Madrid, will make a move for the player. But for the time being, with Juve’s midfield options diminished and no pressure to sell, to see Pogbamake the switch to Madrid would represent a major surprise.
Pogba would be a wonderful signing for Real, but looks unlikely to move this summer.
Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Johnson ran the rule over some of the business Los Blancos are more likely to conduct in the final embers of the summer window :

CR7, Bale & Benzema Called Into Question

Default

Real Madrid’s front-three of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema have been criticised for their poor goal return in their pre-season tour.
Real’s attacking trio, otherwise known as the ‘BBC’, have been heavily questioned for only managing to score two goals in their pre-season tour of Australia and China.
The only two goals scored from the front-three came in their friendly match against Manchester City, with Ronaldo and Benzema finding the net against the Premier League outfit.
Bale and Ronaldo started in all four of the team’s warm-up games, with the Portuguese completing 226 minutes of game time, while Bale played 237 minutes, according toMarca
Benzema played the fewest minutes of the trio, as the Frenchman featured in just 135 minutes of the tour, where he found the net once.
There have also been questions as to how Rafa Benitez will use the three stars, as there have been rumours that Bale could operate as Los Blancos’ number nine.
Last season the trio found the net 100 times, with Ronaldo scoring 61 of those goals, Benzema scoring 22 times, and Bale 17.

Graphic: Real Madrid’s strongest line-up, excluding Karim Benzema

Real Madrid could use Cristiano Ronaldo instead of Arsenal-linked Karim Benzema as the team’s new centre-forward.
Real Madrid have been fairly quiet this summer on the transfer front, but that hasn’t stopped a number of questions being posed about their best starting XI for the upcoming campaign.
The two main players in question are Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and French international striker Karim Benzema, and both for rather contrasting reasons.
Firstly, the future of Benzema has been thrown into doubt following intense reports of Arsenal interest, the Spanish publication AS claiming this morning that the Gunners see him as their ideal summer signing.
The report goes on to say that the Gunners have £45 million in reserve for the striker, a substantial amount of money which could see the La Liga giants willing to strike a deal.
Furthermore, Benzema’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu has been largely questioned due to the potential switch in positions regarding his teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese superstar may well have posted his best ever scoring campaign last season, though he no longer possesses attributes suited to a player coming in off the flanks.
Fans and observers alike will always remember the runs from deep, powerful long range efforts and dazzling step-overs to fool defenders, yet this is no longer the 30-year-old’s style of play.
Ronaldo has gradually become a devastating goal scorer, capable of short bursts into the box, abnormally good heading ability and such quick reactions in small spaces – ideal for a centre-forward.
Boss Rafa Benitez is said to be pondering the idea of placing the former United star in Benzema’s centre-forward spot, freeing space below for Gareth Bale, Isco and James Rodriguez to provide the creativity.
The rest of the team almost picks itself, with Asier Illarramendi, Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane and Fabio Conetrao providing solid alternatives should injuries, suspension or loss of form occur.

Karim Benzema the man to make Arsenal invincible again, says former Gunner

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema of Real Madrid take part in a training session

Former Arsenal legend Martin Keown has urged Arsene Wenger to do all he can and sign Karim Benzema from Real Madrid.

The Gunners have been linked with the French striker all summer and Keown feels that his addition would make Arsenal invincible again.
Keown was part of the Arsenal 'Invincibles' of 2004, and he told Talk SPORT: “I’d like to see a striker signed.
“I think there is no doubt about it, I’ve been in that dressing room when a top player comes in, it sends a ripple through the dressing room you feel almost invincible and on the outside the opposition look at how good you were before and think how much better you will be now.
“If you’re not the champions and your striker, Olivier Giroud, didn’t start the FA Cup final last season, there are question marks over that position and maybe they need to be addressed.
“Danny Welbeck is injured. Theo Walcott has just signed a new contract so there are lots of options. I’d just like to see a more mobile and frightening front player to come into that Arsenal group.
“Why not go for Karim Benzema to play down the middle. I think Manchester United are just as keen to get a striker in as Arsenal so perhaps those two will be bidding against each other to bring someone in at the last minute.”
There was a fresh twist in Arsenal's long-running search for a star striker last night however, as one of the club's primary targets, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, signed a new contract with Dortmund.
With the departure of manager Jurgen Klopp, and with a number of other first team players supposedly agitating for a move away from the Westfalenstadion- such as the potentially Spurs bound Sven Bender, Arsenal believed they had a good chance of prizing Aubameyang away from the club.
Aubameyang impressed in what was a very challenging season for Dortmund, and he scored 16 goals in 33 matches for his club.
Arsenal, who have claimed that money is no object in their search for a start forward ahead of the new season, valued the Gabon international at £35 million.
However, the 26 year old former Saint-Étienne man has committed his long term future to Dortmund, by signing a contract extension up until 2020.
Aubameyang's decision will directly impact on the now long-running Karim Benzema transfer saga.
Benzema is Arsenal's top target, and the club are supposedly desperate to tempt the French striker with a move to London.
The player himself is believed to be open to the idea of the switch, and is particularly struck by the idea of working with Arsene Wenger.
Benzema is also thought to be excited by the idea of, once again, becoming a team's leading man. At Lyon and whilst on international duty, Benzema is the star turn, but at Real Madrid he often plays second fiddle to the trio of Ronaldo, Bale and James.
This would not be the case in north London, and Wenger would sanction a contract for the striker that would take him above the club's top earners, which are currently Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, and now Theo Walcott.
